What can you remember from Boxing Day Tests?
We’ll start with an easy one. In the MCG Boxing Day Test between India and Australia in 2014, which two batsmen scored centuries? Both went on to become stars of the game.
Spin king Shane Warne enjoyed years of tormenting England bowlers, and in the 2006-07 Ashes Test at the MCG, Warne cemented his legacy by becoming the first player ever to take 700 Test wickets. But which English batsman did he dismiss?
In the 1998 MCG Ashes Test, an England side captained by Alec Stewart was staring down the barrel of defeat. Australia, at 130-3, needed just 45 runs to win. Remarkably, the hosts went on to lose the Test by 12 runs. Which English bowler took a spectacular 6-60 in that innings to help the tourists to an unlikely victory?
On 26 December 2003, India’s big-hitting opener Virender Sehwag unleashed some fireworks as he blasted 195 off 223 balls at the MCG. But Sehwag was outdone by an Australian batsman who batted for 10 hours to score a career-best 256, helping his side to an easy nine-wicket win. Who was that batsman?
With 800 dismissals, Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket history. But in the 1995-96 Boxing Day Test, a 23-year-old Murali, with his unusual bowling action, was at the centre of controversy. He was no-balled for ‘chucking’ seven times in the space of three overs, but who was the umpire who made the call?
This could be a tricky one. In 1982, England beat Australia at the MCG in a tense finish. Needing 292 runs to win, the hosts fell short with England’s Norman Cowans taking 6-77, despite a last wicket stand of 70 between Allan Border and Jeff Thomson. That win equalled the then Test record for the smallest margin of victory. But how many runs did England win by?
In the 1999 Boxing Day Test, Australia dominated Sachin Tendulkar’s India as they romped to a 180-run win. Which bowler, who went on to become Australia’s fourth-leading wicket-taker in Test history, made a dream debut in that match, taking 5-47 in the first innings?
Here is one which most England fans won’t be forgetting in a hurry. In 2010, the tourists won by an innings and 157 runs at the MCG. Australia were bowled out for a measly 98 in the first innings, England amassed 513 in reply, before dismissing the hosts for 258.
Which English batsman scored an unbeaten 168 in England’s innings to seal their first Ashes series win down under for 24 years?
The 2010-11 Ashes may have been one to remember for England, but seven years later a side led by Joe Root were humiliated in a 4-0 series loss. But during the Boxing Day fourth Test, one England batsman ensured it would not be a clean sweep for the tourists, scoring an unbeaten 244 not out to help draw the game. Who was it?
Shall we have another Shane Warne question? Why not. The spinner made it a Boxing Day Test to remember in 1994, taking a hat-trick against England on day five at the MCG, with Australia going on to win by 295 runs. Which England batsman did he dismiss with his hat-trick ball?
A poor showing!
It wasn’t the easiest of quizzes, but you could have done better. Have another crack, what else is there to do on Boxing Day?
A good try!
A solid performance in what was a tough quiz. Why not have another go and see if you can better it?
Great effort!
So close to full marks. Go tuck into those turkey leftovers, you’ve earned it.
You superstar!
A Boxing Day to remember! If you were in the MCG right now, the crowd would be chanting your name.
