You’re an activist
An activist is somebody who is actively involved in Diversity and Inclusion, that doesn’t just talk about different groups of people but talks with them and isn't afraid to break the law or take risks to fight for what they believe in. This can include sharing your own story with others and the public. You’ve put in the time to educate yourself on how to be an ally to others and aren’t afraid to speak out against injustices in the world around you. Don’t forget – the work of an activist is never done; you must continue to champion kindness and always be ready to learn more. Keep up the good work! If you haven’t already, become a myGwork mentor to help share what you’ve learnt.
You’re a campaigner
A campaigner has a toolbox of mechanisms for creating positive change in our society at their disposal. You have a history of creating tangible change for marginalized and vulnerable people and aren’t afraid to speak out, even if it’s uncomfortable. Whether you’re launching a social media campaign, getting behind a petition, or rallying for law changes – nothing is going to slow you down. Keep pushing for a better and more equal society, we need more campaigners like you. Don’t forget to share what you’ve learnt, the more we teach and empower others, the larger the impact we can make. Reach out to myGwork to share what you’ve learnt and accomplished, we’re always excited to hear from passionate inclusivity champions.
You’re an ally
An ally is somebody who works to end oppression in his or her own personal and professional life by supporting those who might be oppressed or discriminated against. You’ve put in the work and proven a true commitment to bettering yourself as an ally to others and speaking up against wrongdoing. However, you still have a little more to do before you truly embody diversity and inclusion. Keep asking questions, educating yourself and others, and above all leading with compassion and you’ll be the leading the way for a new generation of equality pioneers before you know it! Hopefully, we’ll see you at a myGwork event or webinar soon, that way you can share what you already know and ask questions to learn more.
You're a learner
A learner is somebody who is actively trying to understand people from other groups or the groups that they themselves fall into. You may just be at the start of your equality and inclusion journey, but that’s okay! We all start somewhere and as long as you're open to learning, understand that sometimes you may get it wrong and are persistent in achieving your goals, there’s no doubt that you’ll be an equality champion soon. You’ve already made an authentic commitment to equality and inclusion, now you just need to remember why this journey is so important and stay motivated – keep going, you’ve got this! Make sure you have a profile on myGwork and remember you can reach out to anyone on the platform that’s registered as a mentor – if you have questions or need advice, the myGwork community are always ready to help.
You’re a cheerleader
A cheerleader is happiest when supporting and uplifting their friends, but still has work to do when it comes to speaking up for those outside of their bubble. Your heart is in the right place, which is important but to truly embody inclusivity you need to take it further. Connect with people on myGwork and learn from those with lived experiences different from your own to help you on your journey. You have an empathetic spirit, and this is going to help you as you open your heart and mind to learn from those around you.
You’re a novice
A novice is somebody who is starting on the journey of understanding Diversity and Inclusion and learning why it matters so much. This may be just the beginning for you but don’t fret, no one becomes an equality guru overnight. Spoiler Alert: This is going to take work, but it’s also going to be worth it. We all have to start somewhere and as long as you have a readiness to learn, your journey will not only make you a better ally to others but help enrich and open your own mind. If you need a place to start, try our WorkPride resources – these are packed with insight from LGBTQ+ people all around the world who share their advice, expertise and lived experiences. You’re at the start of something very important, good luck!
